Approved the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba (April 1961). He provided armed helicopters and crews to fight Communists in South Vietnam, expanding U.S. involvement. In October 1962 he ordered air and naval blockade of Cuba, forcing the Soviet Union to remove all nuclear missiles from the island. JFK set up the first hotline and teletype link between the White House and the Kremlin. In October 1963 he signed a nuclear test ban treaty with Britain and the Soviet Union.
