Postwar recession led to high unemployment. Immigration was restricted by a quota system. After Harding's death on August 2, 1923, Senate investigations revealed widespread government corruption. One of the scandals was the Teapot Dome. It involved the laesing of naval-oil-reserve-lands to a private oil company. The the secretary of the interior, who had been appointed by Harding, Albert Fall, was later jailed for taking bribes to approve the leases.
