1869-1877

Ulysses S. Grant

Vice President was Schuyler Colfax.

U.S. Grant's First Inaugural Address.

U.S. Grant's Second Inaugural Address.

He introduced a harsch postwar Reconstruction policy. Grant sent federal troops to occupy the South and gave economic supremacy to Northern bankers and industrialists.

During these years Northerners, speculators and politicians alike went south to exploit the defeated Southerners. Those men often carrying just one bag made of carpetlike material became known by the contemptuous name "carpetbaggers".

The term "scalawags" was coined at the same time for people who worked together with those carpetbaggers.

Under Grant the first transcontinental railroad was completed (1869).

Grant amended the constitution to give male blacks, including former male slaves -- but not women of any color -- the right to vote (1870).

General George Custer and his troops were killed by Sioux Indians at Battle of Little Big Horn in Montana (1876).

About his private life: Would anyone have listened to any young woman if Ulysses S. Grant would have had a casual affair with her?

You be the Judge!

Ulysses S. Grant

18 Ulysses S. Grant

Died: July 23, 1885.

Age when inaugurated: 46.

Term: 1869-1877. Grant was the top Union military hero of the Civil War. His two terms were marred by scandals.

Famous Fact: Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. But an error on his application to West Point changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant. He liked the initials so much that he kept the name.(Source: scholasticnetwork.com)
