Welcome to U.S. history!
What went wrong?
(What led to the American settlers'
revolt?)
During the "Period of Neglect" England
had little time to baby-sit their American colonies. Only after the "Second to last
war" between England and France which was fought all over the world did Briton find
time to take a closer look at their colonies in America. At this time the British
rightfully asked their American colonies to pay up and carry their fair share to the cost
for government and military spending through taxes.
1763
The settlers were not so easy convinced that they had to
pay for a standing army which wasn't doing much like in the case of letting the Ottowa
Chief Pontiac (1763) pass into settler territory where he was able to kill several
thousand people.
The same settlers were also banking on the opening up of
new territory, however the Proclamation of 1763 restrained the Americans from moving
westward.
1764
The British added to the Navigation Act which had
controlled commerce to the mother country since 1660 a new one. This time it was the
Revenue Act of 1764, also known as the Sugar Act. This one was designed to create revenue
by imposing import duties on sugar, coffee, wines, and other imported goods. It expanded
the jurisdiction of the vice-admirality courts and was aimed to curb smuggling. Of course,
the colonists protested against such.
