1776 Beginning of 1776 Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" became a bestseller. And during the 2nd Continental Congress, 1775-76 in Philadelphia, John Adams a clever lawyer nominated Thomas Jefferson from the southern colonies to draw up the Declaration of Independence. Of course Ben Franklin a newspaper-owner was on this committee too.
