In August the towns of Ipswitch and Topsfield resisted
assessments imposed by Governor Andros in protest of taxation without representation.
1688
In March, Gov. Andros imposed a limit of one annual town
meeting for New England towns. The governor also orders all militias to be placed under
his control.
1688
The Quakers in Pennsylvania issued a formal protest against
slavery in America.
1688
In December, King James II of England fleed to France after
being more or less gently kicked by some influential English leaders.
1689
In April, New England Gov. Andros was jailed by rebellious
colonists in Boston.
In July, the English government ordered Andros to be returned
to England to stand trial.
1690
Was the beginning of King William's War as hostilities in
Europe between the French and the English spilled over into the colonies.
1696
The Royal African Trade Company lost its slave trade monopoly,
such spurred colonists in New England to engage in slave trading for profit.
1700
The Anglo population in the English was estimated at 250,000.
Boston as the largest city had approx. 7000 people and New York as second largest counted
about 5000.

In June, Massachusetts passed a law ordering all Roman
Catholic priests to leave the colony within three months, upon penalty of life
imprisonment or execution. Soon after New York passed a similar law. Religious freedom was
still far away.
1701
In July, the French established Detroit.
In October Yale college was founded in Connecticut.
1702
In March, Queen Anne ascended the English throne.
In May, England declared war on France after the death of the
King of Spain Charles II, to stop the union between Spain and France. This war of Spanish
Succession became also known as Queen Anne's War and in the colonies the English side by
side with the American colonists battled the French, their Native American allies and the
Spanish for the next 11 years.

In Virginia, slaves were assigned the status of real estate by
the Virginia Black Code of 1705. In New York, a law against runaway slaves assigned the
death penalty for those caught over 40 miles north of Albany. Massachusetts declared
marriage between African Blacks and whites illegal.
1713
Queen Anne's war ended with the Treaty of Utrecht.
1718
New Orleans was founded by the French.
1720
The population of American colonists reached approx 500,000.
Boston was still the largest city with 12,000 people, followed by Philadelphia with about
10,000 and New York at approx. 7,000.
The population of black slaves was given as approx. 75,000.
