Welcome to U.S. history!
And who were the people who revolted?
(In the American Revolution)
The third group were all
those who due to no other reason than by chance or misfortune ended up in America and had
no way to get back to their own countries. They did not want to be in America but due to
lack of opportunities to leave they stayed and became an important part of the New World.
Such includes servants, slaves, stranded sailors, retired military and adventurers alike.
Between 1619 and 1622 immigrants arrived in Virginia in record
numbers, most of them were young man. Many came as indentured servants lured by great
promises. No place else to go they had to stay. Planting tobacco was labor intensive. In
1619 the first slaves were brought in. English colonists did not hesitate to enslave black
people; the decision to import African slaves to the British colonies was based primarily
on economic considerations. English masters associated African blacks with heathen
religion, barbarous behavior, sexual promiscuity -- in fact with evil itself. Those slaves
were robbed of their own identity, language and culture. Enduring much hardship they
planted and harvested the fields in the South.
1718-
Between 1718 and 1785 coerced into moving into the New World
were also approximately 50,000 convicts. America Past and Present states, "Sold
primarily in the Chesapeake colonies as indentured servants, they faced an uncertain
future... ...Americans expressed fear that these men and women would create a dangerous
criminal class".
