 | *1832 Virginia legislature voted against gradual emancipation. |
 | *1832-1833. A crisis erupted over South Carolinas attempt to nullify the
tariff of 1832. When Calhoun in South Carolina pushed the Nullification Act through,
Jackson asked Congress to vote him the authority to use the army to enforce the tariff the
relationship between federal government and the South was greatly tested.
