Welcome
to U.S. history!
 | 1828 Congress passed the "Tariff of Abominations." |
 | **After the passage of the "Tariff of Abominations" in South
Carolina the states legislature declared the new duties unconstitutional and
endorsed a lengthy disquisition (written anonymously by Calhoun ) that affirmed the right
of an individual state to nullify federal law. Such created much tension between the North
and South. |
 | 1828 Jackson was elected
president over John Quincy Adams. Historians viewed Andrew Jacksons coming into
power as the critical moment when democratic spirit took over in America. Self-made men
could from now one rise from low origins to positions of power. Jacksonianism preached
equality of opportunity, it never said equality of rewards. |
*Causes,** leading causes, ***immediate leading causes for a
Civil War.
