Welcome
to U.S. history!
 | 1804 -1806, Lewis and Clark explored the Northwest.
|
 | * The Jefferson years: British visitors often disliked Jeffersonian
society. Wherever they traveled in the young republic, they met ill-mannered people
inspired with a ruling passion for liberty and equality. Answers from white workers like,
"Listen Im no slave!" ..."Only blacks are slaves!" were common
and mirror Jeffersonian Republicanism and its self-confident, assertive, blatantly racist
attitude. The limitation of Jeffersons equality vision were obvious. Those people
who spoke most nobly of equality were often themselves slaveholders.
